Review of The Savages (2007) by Tara H — 29 Mar 2009
This is a smallscale, indie movie about modern family life, and as such is never going to compete with the big-budget epics. But it brings warmth and humour to a dark subject - the death of a parent, and how it forces estranged siblings together.
Laura Linney, my favourite US actress today, is funny and vulnerable, and Philip Seymour Hoffman makes a perfect foil. They are selfish, silly and very human. Ultimately the film made me think about modern life and how it isolates us from one another - something perhaps only the reality of death can bring into focus.
