Review of The Sapphires (2012) by Joel A — 09 Aug 2012
A feel-good story about four aboriginal girls from a remote mission in Australia who win a chance to entertain US troops during the Vietnam War with soul music. Jessica Mauboy is an exciting talent as the lead singer and there are good acting performances from Deborah Mailman and Chris O'Dowd as unlikely soul mates.
The movie uses humour to expose the racism of the times. Some of the sub-plots are implausible but the movie is good fun. At the session I attended, it received a round of applause as the credits rolled.
