Review of The Sapphires (2012) by Trevor H — 02 Feb 2013
The best Australian feelgood movie since Juno. The fact that it's based on a true story makes the experience all the better. The Sapphires are formed when four Aboriginal girls put themselves forward to travel to Vietnam to entertain the combat troops in the late 1960s.
The acting is strong and edgy, with stand-out performances from Chris O'Dowd and Jessica Mauboy. I can't help but compare it to the film of the Roddy Doyle book The Commitments. It will probably do for Australia what that movie did for Ireland.
The soundtrack of course, lifts the movie to foot tapping feelgood level.
