Review of The Sapphires (2012) by C H — 07 Apr 2013
To be overly critical of this movie would be like kicking a baby kangaroo. It is sincere, sweet, and the girls are both cute and charismatic. They are kind of an aborigines Sister Sledge, and once they start singing soul music they really shake it up.
My only quibble was a very minor one: they were somehow singing "Whatta Man" in the '60s but this was an En Vogue hit that didn't come out until the early '90s. (So what? They rocked it!) This movie is based on an amazing true story; these were gutsy girls who braved the crossfire and hell of Vietnam to entertain the troops.
I enjoyed this movie, as did a female friend I went with. Despite its overly familiar "underdog makes good" and "believe in your dream" themes, it seemed fresh and engaging. The Sapphires is a hidden gem and a good time at the movies.
(btw, in all due respect there was a Philadelphia soul group called The Sapphires as well "back in the day" who had a few hits and not to be confused with this girl group.).
