Review of The Sapphires (2012) by Matt W — 12 May 2013
There is no denying that the film has charm, but something definitely felt missing from this Australian musical comedy. Chris O'Dowd is the stand out of the film, and is the main reason why you would choose to watch it, and should watch it.
The Sapphires themselves are probably the weakest part of the film in the way of performances with the eldest, Gale, being the strongest. The music is catchy, and the humour amusing, but there is no depth behind it. Although there is sadness present always, you never get a true insight into the character's flaws.
I felt like I was watching the highlights of a career, rather than a life story. This is not to say that the film is not enjoyable, as I was always entertained, but I was left wanting more. More depth, more character. More something.
