Review of The Sapphires (2012) by Calvin C — 13 Sep 2013
Dreamgirls lite, but that isn't a bad thing. Chris O'Dowd leads a great cast in this true story about a group of Aboriginal girls who dream to make it big in music. They get it when they are sent to Vietnam to sing for the troops. Everything in a musical group story is there; the fighting, the racism, the sexism, the drinking, the break-up, etc. However, the soul music is foot tapping and all the performances are earnest. It is not too heavy on the drama, and it has its funny moments. The historical aspect of the story does give the film some meaning and with the music, it is an enjoyable show.
Grade: A-.
