Review of The Sanctuary (2009) by Trent R — 29 Jan 2010
Disappointing mix of top-notch martial arts with poor cinematography and worse editing. They genuinely seemed to be trying to give it a plot, with a little backstory, some jumping about, and the occasional payoff. Good to see, as was the mix of stylists in adversaries.
Mike B. unfortunately seems too used to being on the receiving end of the fight, as his bouts with fellow stuntmen are much more exciting than the final duel with Russell Wong. This has a spectacular cliffside and tidepool setting, but quickly devolves into one long slow-motion K.O.
Quite a letdown, as they had built up Mike B. throughout the film as a JC-like human pinball and Wong as a linear killing machine. Still, I liked the cast and the effort put into everything and think they are all worth keeping an eye on.
