Review of The Salton Sea (2002) by John H — 30 Nov 2010
Ambitious, dark and stylish neo-noir. Occasionally unpredictable and funny, although its mood shifts to violent and bleak, making the earlier humor seem out of place. The attempts at quirkiness detract from the otherwise powerful story. It also ventures into Hollywood cliches, although the writing lampshades this. The cast is great with a scene-stealing performance by Vincent D'Onofrio. The score by Thomas Newman is moody and atmospheric. Tries a bit too hard where some restraint could've meant a great crime drama.
7.5/10.
