Review of The Saddest Music in the World (2003) by Zach H — 17 Jun 2007
The story wasn't what I thought it would be (I was expecting something, I dunno, sadder), but the filmmaking...just wow. It looks for all the world like a pre-1930 silent film, complete with black and white stock and beautiful, gauzy dissolves and superimpositions.
Then, when the film suddenly leaps into color - a very underused effect, I might add - it's as jarring, and riveting, as Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible. Plus there's Isabella Rosselini...with no fucking legs.
What more could a boy ask for?
