Review of The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966) by Tom K — 14 Aug 2011
I thought that the movie was funny. I think that the movie was created during a curtain period of time of fear but I unfortunately think that some of the jokes are going to loose it's comedic purpose because of the times which the movie was filmed in.
People of today won't understand the jokes because they did not live in the day. I think that the movie was well done and they did a great job of creating New England out of California. Also I believe that they were able to portray the people in the town and also the Russians in a believable way which is surprising for a film made in 1965.
But they were also able to make the movie not be offensive to the Russians or the Americans at the Height of the Cold War. I felt that I had a bigger appreciation for the film after listening to the directors commentary of the film.
This film did a great job of creating suspense towards the end of the film as all the town and the Russians are pointing Thierry weapons at each other but then suddenly are able to create an international emotion which both cultures could relate to and help when a child falls and ask for help .
The scene goes from suspense of you waiting for weapons to fire to each of the groups uniting to help a child get off a Church Ruff. That scene is genius in the ability to drastically change the audiences emotions from suspense, fear, to joy at the end for saving a child but also helping each other showing a community being able to get organized.
