Review of The Running Man (1987) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
In the year 2019, violent television has completely taken over American society. Ben Richards (Arnold) is framed to cover up a malicious military mass mutilation (try saying that 5 times fast). After escaping from prison with his friends Weiss & Laughlin, Arnold tries to go back to society while his friends join the resistance. When Ben is caught, he and his pals are forced to compete on The Running Man, a TV survival show where Stalkers are sent to murder the contestants, by the shows creator Damon Killian (Richard Dawson). Of course Arnold bloodily battles his way through killer after killer to a final showdown with Killian.
Well, ladies & gentleman it's time to start reviewing! This flick takes a different approach than most of Arnold's movies. While the plot is set in a future with people who enjoy watching gore and violence for entertainment, it sends a subtle message to our own society. And believe it or not, it was intentional! The film is based on the novel by Stephen King (although credited with an alias). Another thing that makes this a trademark Arnold film are the taglines. Definitely a recommended film if you like Arnie (what isn't other than Conan 2?). With a smile and a satisfied violence factor, I give The Running Man 6 out of 10.
"I'll tell you what I think you son of a bitch. I live to see you eat that contract. But I hope you leave enough room for my fist because I'm going to ram it into your stomach, AND BREAK YOUR GODDAMN SPINE!".
Ah. Classic Arnold.
