Review of The Running Man (1987) by Lee B — 13 Sep 2010
"The Running Man" was originally penned under Stephen King's pseudonym and brought to life in 1987. While some of the original intent and King dark humor can be found in here, it largely diverges from the book.
There's some neat 'Bladerunner inspired' moments here, but it is easily overwhelmed by the 80s cheese camp that engulfs this film. Arnold is his usual action self with amazingly dumb one liners, but Maria Conchita Alonso adds some sex appeal as an annoying, screaming woman with a deep accent.
Richard Dawson was a fun foil, but overall the script doesn't help him since he can't even keep his henchmen in line when they rebel. The whole concept about a game show for criminals though is genius and I would not be surprised to see a remake in the works.
