Review of The Running Man (1987) by Ross B — 19 Aug 2013
Paul Michael Glaser directs this adaptation of Richard Bachman's (a pseudonym of Stephen King) novel and creates a fun B sci fi film. In a dystopian future, the government covers up the repression of its people by distracting them with a gladiatorial game show called The Running Man, hosted by Damon Killian (Richard Dawson).
The latest contestant is Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former cop who is framed by the government for killing 60 innocent people because he refused to do it himself. Will Ben be able to survive this deadly game? The film is cheesy and filled with one liners but there is a certain fun to all of the film.
The film has a certain 80s charm that works, especially with the always campy Schwarzenegger around. All in all it is a light, fun action movie that tries to have some semblance of a brain at least.
