Review of The Runaways (2010) by Khalil P — 14 Nov 2012
This film finally nailed Sigismondi as a lowbrow Matthew Barney with nothing to offer beyond a bizarre aesthetic. The film is gorgeously shot but ultimately a dull and conventional coming-of-age picture. It appears that visual and literary genius do not always come hand in hand.
Either way, Sigismondi actually forwent her surrealist leanings for this film so she didn't get to exhibit her aesthetic mark or treat her usual theme (body politics and body modifications in modernity). She probably has hope as a filmmaker if she considers the body-horror genre or, at least, a collaboration with Cronenberg.
Two stars, one for cinematography and another so she doesn't give up the medium.
Lov u floria.
