Review of The Rum Diary (2011) by Arven A — 18 Aug 2012
I liked this a lot. As a prequel to Fear & Loathing it lacked the craziness of that previous classic, and yet it just appealed to me to see what was effectively Raoul Duke starting out with morals and hope.
Plus I loved the simple period atmosphere and sufficiently selfish plot. I give this 4 instead of 5 only cos it missed the opportunity to play out a few more drug/alcohol-fueled delusionary special-effects scenes, which worked so well in F&L.
