Review of The Rum Diary (2011) by Russell S — 10 Nov 2012
The Rum Diary fails to make any choices or points. Its political argument is weak and goes mostly unexplored. The main character, Paul, is an alcoholic, but not that much of a drunk. The bad guy does not really hurt him but let him walk off with his wife.
Paul looses his job, which was not that much of a job to begin with. The romance between Paul and Chenault fizzles out without any arguments, just like the ending of the film. What's more, Johnny Depp's performance brought tears to my eyes - and not in a good way.
