Review of The Rum Diary (2011) by Trevor G — 14 Nov 2012
The Rum Diary is a movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Bruce Robinson. It is about an American journalist named Paul Kemp, who takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for writing for a run-down local newspaper during the 1960s and his volatile editor, Lotterman, assigns him to tourist pieces and horoscopes, but promises more.
Paul rooms with Sala, an aging and equally alcoholic reporter, in a rundown flat. Throughout the narrative, Paul struggles to find a balance between island culture and the expatriates who live there. Overall this was an alright movie, it was the best or the worst: I give it a 6 out 10 rating.
