Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Geofferson S — 10 Feb 2008
I love reading through other peoples' reviews before I start my own because, well I always know what I think of a film, and most of the time what I think of a film is pretty much on par with everyone else (give or take a few guilty pleasures), but there is always that miniscule, (if not becoming more adamant) portion of people that show an incredible amount of laziness, and failure to admire something that branches out into a direction not commonly used by every generic film director/writer/producer/etc.
The Rules of Attraction, demonstrates Ellis' failure to give the audience what they desire, his need to alienate them, and his brutally honest style. I think Roger Avary did a fantastic job at illustrating the chaotic entanglement, and frantic dishonesty within a social degradation shown in the novel, albeit the artsy film school editing tricks could have drug on a little less I think they weren't out of place.
On a side note I'd just like to say that I love the synopsis for this film, never have I read one that ultimately aims to insult the movie in which it's trying to describe, fantastic!
