Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Liria O — 04 Apr 2008
"Nobody ever knows anyone. You're never ever going to know me." Perhaps the shining example of the principle characters' nihilism during this disjointed attempt to adapt the satirical Ellis novel.
The film is really more of a collection of parts (scenes) rather than a complete body of work, and there are a few such scenes that merit the 3 star rating from me. The rewind chronology at the film's start is clever, but the truly masterful scenes are a mixture of black comedy, emotional suffering, and social depravity.
In particular, I won't soon forget the suicide scene that hits like a sledgehammer and the five minute montage of Victor's trip to Europe.
