Review of The Ruins (2008) by Kyle L — 23 May 2012
Gruesome, graphic and yet it's also thrilling and really violent The Ruins is one of the best Horror films of 2008 and one of the most watchable films of 2008 as well. The Ruins is a great Horror film based on Scott Smith's novel of the same name and it's about a group of American tourists meet up with a German tourists who is asking for help in finding his brother in a jungle and as the group enters the jungle they find a really big ruin in the jungle but soon when the Mayans came the group discovered that they're being quarantined by the Mayans and something also evil lurks deep within the ruins and they must try to escape before they all die.
Like I said this is an amazing killer plant Horror movie and this film has a lot of good moments. I never read Scott Smith's book but I'm seriously eager to read it and once I read Scott Smith's book I will re watch this film again and see what are the changes in the film from the novel.
This is a great film so far and it is really watchable and there are so many great moments that will make you watch the film over and over again. What's great about The Ruins is that the film has a good pace and the film is even entertaining and it never gets dull and boring and it also makes you want to watch the film more from start to finish in which it makes the film look good so far.
This film has a lot of great things that I seriously enjoy that made me want to watch a lot every time. What I do like about The Ruins is that the screenplay is well written by the author Scott Smith and I like the idea that he wrote the screenplay of the film with director Carter Smith's help on directing the movie which I seriously like so far.
Other than that what I'm also proud with The Ruins is that the film also has a better concept than most movies about American tourists ending up in a nightmare and it's not like Hostel and Turistas which I'm seriously glad that this is no torture film and it's a killer plant Horror film that I seriously wanted to watch over and over again and I like the idea of the concept so far.
What I also like about The Ruins is that the film is also full of suspenceful and tense scenes from start to finish and there are so many suspenceful and tense scenes in this movie the opening scene where the girl is dragged in the darkness is one of the most tense and suspenceful scenes in the film.
The scene where Stacy and Amy look for the phone in the ruins only to discover that it's the flowers making the sound is one of the most intense scenes in the film and I did like the idea of the flowers making phone sounds which is seriously a good idea so far.
What I also like about The Ruins is that the film has a lot of unflinching, violent, sometimes brutal, disgusting and gory sequences. The scene where Mathias' legs gets amputated is one of the most violent and graphic scenes in the film and that is also one of the hardest scenes to watch in a Horror movie because the way Jeff amputates his legs is really graphic and disgusting and the idea of using a rock to break his leg and cut it off with a knife is one of the most disturbing moments in a Horror movie and it is super disgusting and gruesome as well.
The scene where Dimitri gets shot with an arrow and executed with one shot in the head by the Mayan is one of the most intense kills in Horror movie history. While the scene where Stacy cuts herself with a knife to remove the remaining vines in her body is one of the most disturbing and the nastiest scenes in the film and it is one of the hardest scenes to watch in the film and the idea that she showed her entire body with lots of cuts from the knife is really disturbing and graphic as well and the graphic and gory violence in this film is really unflinching and unsettling as well.
Now the acting is great. The performances from the ensemble casts like Jonathan Tucker, Joe Anderson, Shawn Ashmore, Laura Ramsey and Jena Malone is really good and all of the ensemble casts did a good job with they're performances in the film so far and I like that idea so far because the casts did an amazing job with they're roles in the film.
Director Carter Smith did a good job with his work with the entire film along with writer and author Scott Smith and they both did a good job with adapting Smith's novel into the big screen and I'm seriously proud with they're work with the film so far.
Overall The Ruins gets a 10/10 because this film is full of suspenceful and tense sequences plus the entire film is graphic and super gory from start to finish with a great performance from the ensemble casts and impressive directing from Director Carter Smith and impressive screenplay from writer and author Scott Smith.
I'm planning to re watch this film again once I read the book by Scott Smith.
