Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Clark B — 13 Jan 2011
I've yet to see a Wes Anderson movie that I didn't enjoy, save for his first, Bottle Rocket. I hated Bottle Rocket, which is so odd as I usually love the first movie from a director and use it as a measuring stick for their subsequent films. Not in this case.
I first noticed Wes Anderson's movies with Rushmore, as I'm sure many who enjoy his work did. I still like Rushmore, but it's not in the top 10. Great film and I could not pick out anything that I didn't like about it, but this film just outshines or does everything Rushmore tried so much better.
I think this is the best role I've ever seen Gene Hackman in, and that is saying a lot as he's one of if not my favorite actor (up there with Newman). And once again, this is a great use of a terrific ensemble class. It holds up to the test of time as well, as I continue to watch it and still enjoy it.
