Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Kerry M — 15 Nov 2011
A consistently amusing comedy about sadness, failure, and family dysfunction. It's sometimes dark, often downright bitter. But it has a top-notch cast, excellent characters, script, direction, editing, music etc.
It's very moving, without ever resorting to cheap sentimentality. And the jokes are hilarious, but smart and restrained. Wes Anderson respects the audience enough to let them find the humor in the situation on their own.
Tied with Rushmore, this is his masterpiece.
