Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Kyle T — 26 Apr 2012
A fun family-oriented romp. The performances are solid, the writing is both touching and comedic, and Wes Andersonâ(TM)s direction is good. There are some really good shots in here, at least for me. Some story bits get glazed over, more towards the end, but for the most part, the story is well organized and is very fun.
The quirky family has a lot of character in it, doing a lot to help separate all of the characters. As I said earlier, the script is very funny at times, and has a lot of heart to its comedy, and the dramatic bits are genuinely dramatic.
Itâ(TM)s nothing that will make you cry, but the drama is, like the comedy, played with a lot of heart to it. A lot of this heart seems to come from the well-placed soundtrack and timing of a lot of what happens.
There is not too much else that I can say about it. The large cast pays off well, and does a lot to separate themselves so that you get to know them, the soundtrack is good, the script is done well, and overall, the film just has heart and quirk, which all help the film.
