Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Nelson D — 02 Jul 2012
I really enjoy Wes Anderson movies. There's always that distant deadpan and strange sense of warmth in his best work that strongly appeals to me, and I imagine others feel the same way. Though, I'm not sure quite as many will agree with me when I say that this is Anderson's best film, because every single person I've met that likes the expereince of his movies love Rushmore to bits - they have a certain affinity for it that I don't quite understand, and I guess now they can have those same feelings towards me.
The main ingredient here that I think just elevates this into the realm of greatness is, of course, Gene Hackman, in a Golden Globe winning role as Royal. He should have at least been nominated for an Oscar, in my opinion.
He brings a depth that a lesser actor might not have the ability to conjure, a depth that perfectly compliments the film's universe.
