Review of The Rover (2014) by Walter M — 08 Jul 2014
Ten years after the collapse, three desperate men race across the Australian outback, with Henry(Scoot McNairy) not in very good shape. They can also not agree on much of anything. That leads to a crash. So, they steal another vehicle that they happen upon. That car belongs to a man(Guy Pearce) who was inside minding his own business. Now, he is intent on getting his car back at any cost. Oh, and by the way, Rey(Robert Pattinson), Henry's brother is not as dead as previously thought.
Embodying the less is more mentality of "The Rover" is an exemplary performance from Guy Pearce who conveys much through a minimal use of dialogue.(Alright, I'll admit it. I'm now convinced Robert Pattinson can act.) And this simple set-up is perfect for this raw and intense study of what stops humanity from killing each other. In other words, is a governing force needed at all times or is there some hope for all of us? Considering there is a dedicated doctor(Susan Prior) in this wasteland and why exactly the man needs his car back so badly, despite the collateral damage, maybe, just maybe, it is the latter.
