Review of The Rookie (2002) by Owen O — 07 Nov 2009
The movie has a few feel-good eye-watering moments towards the bitter end I must confess, but all the time wasted telling this mediocre, predictable tale!! The movie is just over 2 hours, at least 25 minutes too long. I have to confess I don't know baseball, this is not a big sport in Sweden! However, this didn't really affect my grade.
I like the notion that "It's never too late to believe in your dreams", it sure does make for a nice DVD cover.
The choice of songs was awkward, maybe Americans relate better to the soundtrack. Nothing of significance happened in the first 40 minutes. The start of the movie with the nuns of Sta Rita investing their money with a man who just knows there is oil beneath his feet and spreading yellow rose petals to bless the investment after their priest told them to cancel it after the money had already been spent!! Come on! I am still wondering if they did get a ROI on their investment in the end... The story did tell us that oil was found, but not if and how much the nuns made from their investment.
The movie has a "feel-real" (as in: not glamorous) to it which I like. Not crazy about Dennis Quaid, but he's ok in this movie. The kid that plays the son does a good part.
I wouldn't see it again and I'd recommend others not to expect too much...
