Review of The Rocketeer (1991) by Forrest P — 18 Jul 2011
How can you go wrong using the Indiana Jones playbook?
The Rocketeer starts off with a bang but then fizzles when the audience is left with the one dimensional main character who is mostly jetpack-less throughout the whole film.
There are some weird editing and directorial choices like when scenes drag on longer than they should, awkward zoom ins on Jennifer Connelly's breasts, and the inclusion of Howard Hughes (what is Hollywood's fascination with him anyhow?).
Timothy Dalton nails it as the charismatic villain and the freakishly giant henchman is pretty cool too.
Despite a promising idea, much of the action is too slapstick to be taken seriously. Aside from the creative set pieces and the few dramatic moments, the Rocketeer movie runs on low fuel.
