Review of The Road to El Dorado (2000) by Felix C — 04 Apr 2014
Rating: 8.1/10 I never saw this movie in theaters when it came out, but I do remember my mother bring it home from the blockbusters down the street, and loved it, for a nine year-old. I didn't get all the jokes, but that was okay, because there was so much more it gave me to laugh at.
. Today, I find it was better than I remember it to be. Really rare that is. But if you look at it and think for a second, what's not to like? The characters are delightful and memorable and the songs weren't bad either.
Even though I'm a huge fan of Elton John, I found that the songs in this movie were not his best. I still think that Rocket Man, Your Song and Daniel are his greatest works. It was almost like Phil Collins and his music in Tarzan, which I think worked almost as well as Elton John's music here.
Still after all these years, the scene that still gets me on the edge of my seat if the fight with the giant stone cat (or, Jaguar if you will). The further they go into the scene the more dangerous and intense it became.
I like that. And the partnership between Miguel and Tulio is believable and mature. I actually believed that they would each go their own way at the end, but nope, they got back together, which could have worked either way.
I just hope there won't be a sequel after this. It ended in a way that you don't have any idea of what kind of adventure they'll have next. You can make it however you think. It's a funny, well-told, and well structured movie.
Certainly a lot better than the schlutz we have being made for kids today. Another thing to think about is that Miguel had made this big preach about not having any sacrifices, but at the end, didn't Tulio and Miguel made sacrifices of their own? Miguel leaving Eldorado?Tulio and the boat-full of gold? Come on, decisions like these are pretty unique for these two characters, no? Overview: Yes, it's a comedy, but how does that make it bad? Sure it might not be an epic like, Lord of the Rings, but, it's a form of storytelling called a "happening".
The pacing was spot on, nothing was overdone or repeated, the animation matched with the character styles pretty well and kept me glued to the TV-even when the credits rolled. It's just a fun, fun movie.
Get your friends together and enjoy yourselves.
