Review of The River Thief (2016) by M W — 03 Nov 2016
Don't believe the friend and family reviews, this was bad, I squirmed in my chair the whole time feeling like I was watching a bad high school play. The characters were moved around heavy-handedly by the author with little consideration for motivation--they did not act or react in believable ways to the situations they were in.
The production values were ok for an indie film but the acting was amateurish and the story a mess, the writer/director trying way too hard to be "deep" and the result was preachy and incoherent.
There was some kind of message he was desperately trying to telegraph that just didn't come through. As Samuel Goldwyn famously said, if you have a message call Western Union. Having said all that, it did hold my interest enough to watch it all the way to the end, so I give it 2 stars.
But the ending was a disappointment.
