Review of The Ritual (2017) by Ken A — 18 Feb 2018
Man this one takes it's time, even at 90 mins there is nothing brisk or captivating about this horror film wrapped in an intelligent message. Just as it starts to pull one on the audience with an image against the tree in the far view it pulses way too slow to the next climax or even intriguing cue.
The best thing here is the story with the friend dying at the start and the meaning in our leads life and where it fits in on this survival story meets Blair Witch. The monster is awesome and something new in a time where they all look like something before in a Marvel or Harry Potter film.
Actually the monster will be the image that sticks and stands the test of time, worthy of 2 points alone but that is how bad this film is to pull it back down to a 1. Good eerie tone and at one time you get a sense of American Werewolf in London but not even close and the end keeps teasing with greatness and then falls flat and hard.
The ending is even off and abruptly cut, poor last impression on a hard sell to begin with.
