The first 40-45 minutes of the movie was just a bunch of yelling, bickering and babbling back and forth between the characters. After that, a typical and predictable story line slowly unfolded while still managing to continue it's rather "slow" ascent to a very weak climax.
I'll never know how (or why) this picture received so many positive reviews. I guess we've learned to lower our standards since there's nothing under the sun that hasn't been done, and THE RITUAL is a classic example of that.
