Review of The Right Stuff (1983) by Ian L — 31 Jan 2008
An excellent rendition of the early days of space missions and the spirit of the most publicly recognisable figures - the first group of US astronauts. Manages to illustrate the characters of several key individuals despite having to deal with 7 astronauts plus the test pilots that preceded them.
Fine cast but no single actor is allowed to dominate the story. Also avoids tipping over the edge into full on stars and stripes flag waving, (which certain directors would almost certainly have chosen to do).
The old footage of the various missions is very well integrated into the film and provides for an authentic period feel throughout. Runs Apollo 13 very close for the best space film to date.
