A 3 hour tribute to the Mercury Space Program failed to produce Star Wars figures at the box office in 1983, but this epic based on Tom Wolfe's non-fiction novel is an achievement, filled to the brim with top performances and just classic sequences of pure cinema (John Glenn humming upon a fraught re-entry into the atmosphere or Chuck Yeagar pushing the inside of the envelope one last time).
