Review of The Right Stuff (1983) by Mark R — 15 Mar 2009
Based on Tom Wolfe's excellent book, this film depicts the early days of America's first manned space program from the selection and training of the original "Mercury Seven" - national heros before they even started - to the early flights.
A great ensemble cast, good pace (for a 3 hour movie) and some very interesting glimpses of how the hero worship spilled into the family lives of the seven.
Some reviewers have described this as a "boy's movie", I don't think so. It also says much about today's "cult of celebrity" the way these guys were as much a media phenomenon and PR exercise as Astronauts!
