Review of The Right Stuff (1983) by Dunn Y — 23 Jun 2009
Epic adventure movie about the glories (and flaws) of the race to space. Famous "march" down the hallway copied later by countless films and shows. Just like Tom Wolfe's book, captures the viewpoint of the pilot and astronaut wives.
..the true moving force behind their husband's careers. Despite lacking the benefits of CGI, the movie gives us the sense of danger and wonder during this primitive stage of space exploration. But the human story is obviously central in this movie.
Acting was flawless from this relatively unknown (at the time) cast. Ed Harris shines, as does Sam Shepard. One of Dennis Quaid's best movies (and one of his first...I guess that says a lot about the rest of his career).
Personally, this is my all time favorite movie. One of the few movies I recall the whole theater audience giving a standing ovation. That never happens anymore. Also, one of the few 3+ hour movies that you don't mind the length.
The pace is edited wonderfully.
