My 86th favorite movie.
The Right Stuff is truly an epic film. While it has its flaws, it should be in the end commended for not only the story it has to tell but the way it tells it.
This epic about the Mercury Program starts out strangely enough in the area of airplanes and trying to break the sound barrier. This segment seems a little long, but I like how the film parallels the advancements in jets with the advancements in space exploration, and it's a great way of showing just how quickly technology changes.
Eventually, the film makes the transition to the United States's Mercury Program: a program designed to get Americans into outer space in reaction to the USSR's Sputnik. The 7 astronauts are all real and they're all played really well by actors such as Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, and Scott Glenn.
What I like so much about this movie is how it shows the sacrifice these seven men had to go through. The various training assignments and family frustrations are very believable.
This film is almost a documentary in that it contains so much information to be learned, but it's about an important time in U.S. and world history that I believe everyone should see it. It is very long, however, at nearly 3.5 hours.
