Review of The Right Stuff (1983) by Mark S — 10 Dec 2011
The story of the Mercury astronauts, told in a way that recalls the nostalgic era when individual acts of bravery were idolized. The movie is told in a humorous and often satirical way, capturing the spirit of Tom Wolfe's groundbreaking book.
Despite the movie's length, it still fails to capture some of Wolfe's most important points. It really should have been done as a five-episode TV miniseries instead of a theatrical release. But the combination of an excellent script, top-notch acting, and Bill Conti's rousing score thrust home Tom Wolfe's message that the astronaut wasn't spam in a can, and he truly possessed The Right Stuff.
