Review of The Revenant (2015) by Steve G — 27 Apr 2016
Leo screamed & cried just enough to win that Oscar.
To be honest, Leo was about as convincing in this as Sean Penn was in Milk. Bear looked fake. the 13 year old sounded 40. Of course they couldn't resist bringing racialism into a story that historically has nothing to do with it. Regardless, great story about the indomitability of the human spirit. Tom Hardy, as always, is the real star of the show. Partly torture porn.
"An empty, pretty thing... little more than a string of breathtaking vistas.".
"Iñárritu's film has a few brief moments of promise, revelation and sheer visceral gratification, but it's ultimately bloated with artless mimicry.".
^ That's too simplistic, but it has some truth.
"Every event in the story ... seemed staged more to give Iñárritu a chance to show off technical virtuosity, to beat his own chest.".
"The Revenant promised to be a wow of a revenge film, but in trying so hard to be complex and meaningful in his patented overeager way, Iñárritu dilutes its impact.".
It drags. Basically the Alberta oil sands.
Beautifully shot. It had the potential to be a masterpiece. As it is, it simply turned out to be good.
The snowflake catching tongue scene was weird, though.
He thinks it's his son, but there's an actual treehugging scene.
Too much an indian racial movie. They couldnt resist. That is its biggest flaw. darn injuns. I was hoping he would use a light saber to open up the horse.
An apt depiction of Alberta, where winter never ends.
Why wold they ride with torches, so Injuns can see them?
Lot of perfunctory scenes. The fight ending could have been more satisfying for me.
