Review of The Revenant (2015) by Antoine V — 27 Apr 2016
This is a great film for lovers of grunts, mumbles. spectacular scenery and bears (but not if you don't like bear violence). Hugh Glass is indestructible which turns out to be handy throughout the course of the film as this poor guy has a really bad couple of days at work.
The flm does a great job of capturing how wild and dangerous North America was and how this is reflected in the men trying to tame it. Inarritu once again shows his flair for camerawork and left me hoping he'll one day do a 20/21st century war film.
It's a strange film for Dicaprio to have finally won an Oscar but I guess acting without speaking is a true challenge and he manages to make a scene where he doesn't blink for a minute truly engaging.
Hardy shows he's the go to guy for mumbles and villainry and manages to be evil with an unnerving nonchalance that gives the impression it's never personal. The only issues are Glass' survival/mishaps start to stretch credibility and the cold distance between the characters which is clearly intentional.
