Review of The Revenant (2015) by Simon T — 19 Jan 2017
A masterpiece. Viscerally exciting, poetic and unusual. The singular storyline (trapper left for dead seeks revenge in the unforgiving cold) allows director Iniarritu to focus on a number of metaphysical themes, not least man's relationship with nature and the purpose of survival.
Eugene Lubezki's constantly prowling camera work is breathtakingly beautiful, DiCaprio - in a presumably very testing performance - excels as the protagonist, and Tom Hardy - channelling Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Shaw - makes a fine, if unintelligible, villain.
Superb.
