Review of The Revenant (2015) by Collin L — 04 Jul 2017
This is a hard film to watch. Bleak, brutal, and relentless, this film does not shy away from showing you even the most gruesome of events with vivid clarity. You will cringe more than once at what is happening on screen.
It's atmospheric and grim, and makes you feel every bit of the struggle of all the characters. The direction is without fault and the performances by Dicaprio and Hardy are superb. The whole film is epic in its scope, it can't imagine the amount of work that went in to making it.
It is a truly masterful film. With all that said, I have to admit it: it's boring. There is very little story here, it's all about one man's struggle for 1.) survival, and 2.) revenge. Against whom, I won't say, but the real villain of the film is the harsh landscape.
The film is peppered with exciting scenes (especially that bear fight!), but in between, it's mostly just Leo wandering around and having ethereal visions/dreams. While these scenes are visually breathtaking, they get old and make the film drag.
Regardless, this is the kind of film the academy eats up with a spoon, so I am thinking it might get the top prize. Leo is a lock for Best Actor, and I believe Innaritu will nab his second consecutive director's trophy.
Both are deserving (it should also pick up awards for cinematography and make-up, at the very least.) This is probably the highest quality of the Best Picture nominees, but it definitely wasn't my favorite.
