Review of The Revenant (2015) by Alec B — 05 Mar 2018
Yeah, Lubezki's cinematography is impressive as is the effects work but this is ultimately an empty headed, overlong, spectacle of misery porn. Iñárritu makes the movie look like it's saying something important (essentially by trying to impersonate Herzog and Malick simultaneously) while neglecting the characters.
By the end all your left with is that the wilderness is untamable and revenge is pointless . . . which is a meager thesis for such a lengthy and grueling movie.
