Review of The Revenant (2012) by Scott M — 25 Sep 2010
An interesting and original premise with mediocre execution. Spends too much time ripping off better movies and not enough time establishing its own style. The film looks cheap, which is never good, especially when some of the shots look like they cost a lot of money.
Still, the originality of the premise does pay off in a few sequences that I really enjoyed, but in the end those parts don't add up to something significant. Tonally, the movie pretty dark, but in a really uncomfortable way.
Attempts to have us sympathize with the characters don't really work because none of the characters are established as anything more than just stock characters.
