Review of The Returned (2004) by Jean-Michel F — 25 Aug 2008
The facebook 'Movie Info' for this is useless. The movie IS about people returning to life after having been dead (sometimes after 3-4 years of death). But, to really enjoy the film, you have to understand it's not horror.
The dead are more physical embodiments of grief. They play out the different stages of grief for their loved ones - Denial, Anger, Withdrawal, Depression, etc. It's a good film that way, too. It accurately tells the story of human grief, in a VERY unique way.
On a side note: My mother died when I was 15. For years afterwards I had a reoccuring nightmare that she was still alive, but had been hospitalized for psychological problems. This movie so much reminded me of those old nightmares. It really rang true. The last stages of grief are letting go.
