Review of The Return of the Living Dead (1985) by Ben T — 01 Nov 2009
A surprisingly good zombie flick!
This is a must-see for those of you who can't get enough of zombies.
Return of the Living Dead isn't a sequel to Night of the Living Dead, but rather an interesting take on the genre. The director did not want to "step on Romero's toes," so he made a comedy of sorts, but made the zombies and special effects realistic. What you get is a tongue-in-cheek film with relatively unknown actors, but GOOD acting, a very interesting story, and excellent make-up. Oh, and synthesizer scary music.
What sets this movie apart from all other zombie movies is this one thing - you CAN'T kill the zombies. Destroying the brain does nothing. Cutting it into pieces does nothing, all the pieces still move, and can attack you. You can burn it, but WHOOPS - the smoke from the burning corpses just floats into the air and causes an acid rain that makes MORE zombies.
Basically, this is NOT the zombie universe that you want to live in. It pretty much takes away everything that's awesome about zombies (the fact that you can kill them without consequence) and just turns it into a total brain-fest. However, because they can't kill the zombies, you're always thinking "How are they going to get out of THIS one?".
Oh, and the zombies TALK in this one! They actually speak complete sentences, too. For the record, this is the only movie that I've seen where the zombies utter "brrrrraaainnnnss..... BRRRAINS!!!".
Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed!
