Review of The Return of the Living Dead (1985) by Brian S — 23 May 2009
If the Academy - or any equally stuffy film society - were to finally acknowledge the artistic merit in horror films, there's no doubt 'The Return of the Living Dead' would rank as highly as 'Citizen Kane'. It's hard for me to praise this film without sounding like a hyperbole-spewing fanboy, but in all honesty, this is...well, it's flawless. Having spent years studying the filmographies of everyone from Tarkovsky to Buñuel to Godard, I can safely say I've never seen a film that works on so many levels (and is so gosh-darn entertaining) as 'The Return of the Living Dead'. No joke.
I could yak on and on about the subtleties and nuances of the film, but 'RotLD''s legacy pretty much speaks for itself. Any horror fan worth their salt already knows of this flick (if they don't already have characters tattooed on their bodies), and anyone who *doesn't* know of it is probably one of those "normal people" I've been told about.
