Review of The Resident (2011) by Lewis C — 17 Jun 2011
"I thought you could pull me out of these walls. I didn't want this at all. I'm so sorry. I was never gonna hurt you.".
The Resident is a snooze of a thriller that's light on the suspense, heavy on the absurd, and completely lacking in originality.
Hilary Swank stars as an ER doctor who moves out of her home with her cheating partner and finds an apartment that seems too good to be true, along with a helpful, charming landlord (Jeffery Dean Morgan). After several suspicious events, she discovers that both her new home and landlord are not what they seem.
This movie just isn't very good. It's an utterly predictable, half-hearted effort that doesn't stand out in any way. The frequent jump "scares" are completely ineffectual, the characters are as dumb as dirt, and the attempts at creepiness often come off as utterly hilarious. I love Hilary Swank as an actress, but this role, and the movie overall, was just a really poor fit for her.
The Resident isn't the worst movie that I've seen recently, but the lack of creativity and effort, and the general feeling of "been there, done that", make it an easy flick to skip.
