Review of The Resident (2011) by Daniel K — 23 Aug 2011
1: I want to say it needed the Hitchcock touch, but I don't think Hitchcock would have ever made a film this poorly constructed and scripted. I suppose it could have worked as an episode of Hitchcock Presents, but it would have been more tasteful.
Maybe I'm simply the wrong gender, but I just didn't find it terribly disturbing or creepy. I'd say it's more likely it just wasn't made very well. I think what really could have made it work would have been a different antagonist.
Morgan just didn't seem up to the challenge. Perhaps Javier Bardem would have pulled it off, as they do bear a resemblance to one another and he has already proven he can be incredibly disturbing.
The first act seemed entirely unnecessary as well, as I had already pictured everything they showed us in the flashbacks. Keeping the audience in the dark regarding the identity would have worked far better with the existing cast.
The score was pretty annoying as well. A disappointment, but I'm sure it works for some.
