Review of The Resident (2011) by Francisco R — 07 Feb 2012
The trailer looked much better, I honestly thought it was better and as I said the trailer looked better, and it also looked diferent from the movie. I didn't like it that much and there's an answer that I want to get clear, is this is a horror or erotic movie? By the way, this movie it's not that scary and I'm not surprised at it's 5.2 on IMDb. This movie is actually entertaining sometimes but it could join a few thhings in it, sometimes it just gets stuck in the same rotine (Didn't like that), this movie had much more to give, but it just couldn't come out and be what it shoold and it could be. Not memorable or amazing.
Antti Jokinsen is who directs this movie, I never heard this name before and I want to keep it that way, first movie of this director's career and I'm not sure if the upcoming movies of this director will be good... let's see. Hilary Swank takes the lead (supporting) role just okay, she's not a bad actress but of course she wasn't going to act the best character of her career, just okay, nothing more than that, HIlary is known from Million Dolar Baby, Boys Don't Cry, P.S. I Love You and much other movies. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has already starred in several movies but he was never that known or famous or even popular, and I also never thought he was an amazing actress, in this movie, it seens that he's trying to play the the lead role instead of the supporting role, that happened sometimes and overall, he didn't had that much of a character or perfomance, Jeffrey is known from Accidently Husband, Watchmen, P.S. I Love You, Texas Killing Fields and some other movies. Lee Pace has a small role, nothing more than that, Lee is known from Marmaduke, Ceremony, When in Rome and some other movies. Christpher Lee completes the main cast but he's defenitly just those kind of cases where they chose a big star and put it in the movie (Like they did in my 6th favorite movie, wich is Crazy, Stupid, Love putting Kevin Bacon on a ten minute role), and then, that star usually has a role or character that is not important it all and basicly, Lee appeard in this movie for five minutes... or less, Chritopher is known from The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Corpse Bride and some other movies. Sow,a s you can see, Hilary Swank is the only acceptable "thing" in the cast, but still, this cast is no big deal, Hilary wasn't enough.
A young doctor named Juliet (Hilary Swank) suspects that she's not alone in her house, she finds out that her landlord has formed a frightning obssession with her. Sow, as you can see, this is a bad kind of plot, I myself didn't like it that much but look, I got to say that it probably worked better than it was supposed to be, but still no big deal, but the trailer cheated on the plot. The plot has some issues, or should I say, lots of them, but look, nobody's perfect.
Soundtrack, well, there was no soundtrack, no scores or actual songs, at least, I don't remember any, but that doesn't matter that much.
Besides all that, I am now going to tell you what I really thought about this movie. First of all, it cood be much better, this movie does have some problems. Let me tell yuo something, this is not really a horror movie, I mean, not everybody can handle it, I just think this is more thrilling than scary and this movie does have some several thrills but only at the ending. I wasn't that entertained while I was watching it, I mean, I'm not going to lie about this, but I actually was entertained for a few minutes and I wish the movie cood keep up like that, this movie has ups and downs, but much more downs. This movie is just bad, it had really much to give, I didn't like to watch and they could make a slight adjustment, Javier Bardem is a much better actors than Jeffrey Dean Morgan and they could replace him and put Javier starring in this movie, at least this movie would have to actors that I like in it and it would probably make it a bit better. Talking about that, Jeffrey sometimes seems that he's the main character, and I dind't like it. Let me tell you what this movie is, before it came out, we watched the trailer and it looked that we were getting ready to watch a new fantastic thriller, it looks like we were at the desert of horror movies and there was no more horror movies in there (There was no more water in the desert), and then when you think that the water is coming because you a big thirst for water, you come take a look at the former place where the river was and then the water tastes gros and it's full of crap, that's what this movie is, but we can still get some nice things from it (Just some of them). I don't recommend you to watch it, I know that you will still be curious, like I did, but in the end you'll understand that I was right, if at least Wes cood take a look at the script, make a few adjustments in it, direct the movie and if he also chosed some diferent actors, I'm sure this movie would be much better, that's why I said that this mvoei had to much to give, but it didn't gave us anything new to our eyes. Overall, this movie is entertaining sometimes, mostly boring and a bit repeated, it has an acceptable cast, an acceptable plot and it's basicly a movie that it's worste than half good. Bad.
Bad movie. Not recommended movie. Grade: D.
