Review of The Rescuers (1977) by Jaime L — 07 Jun 2017
The Rescuers was one of Disney's better moments during an era when their good movies didn't make a lot of money and their movies that performed well at the box office garnered mixed reviews. When you take into consideration the fact that this was the first ever animated film from Disney to have a sequel, it really shows how with The Rescuers, there was still a ray of hope left for Disney.
The animation does kind of look dated today but as a 1977 film I'm not expecting Disney Renaissance animation and the few songs aren't really that hummable. Fortunately, there's still an enjoyable attention to detail, a mix of humour, drama and tension and cute, likable characters.
I doubt Madame Medusa will ever make it to anyone's Top 10 list of Disney villains, though. She's not bland but compared to Jafar, Scar and Frollo among others, she's a bit of a disappointment.
Nevertheless, I still found this film entertaining liking the slightly dark territories it plunges into both literally and figuratively. Good job, Rescuers, for helping lift Disney's spirits up during these dark times for their animation department.
